Josh’s BVH Tour

Hi!  My name is Josh and I live here at Brookville Veterinary Hospital.  Sometimes, when a child is sad that their pet has to stay in the hospital for the day or overnight, I go home with them to keep them company until their pet comes home.  I’d like to take you on a tour of our facility so that you can get a behind-the-scenes peek at what we do here.

 Front Entrance

 Come on in everybody!

Customer Service

Our friendly Customer Service Representatives are here to answer questions and to help owners and their pets navigate through the hospital.  They often offer me yummy treats and if your lucky they might give you one too!  While you wait for your turn with the doctor there are many things to enjoy out here including interactive displays, magazines, books, and a TV.

The Bow Wow Boutique

While you’re here, don’t forget to stop by our Bow Wow Boutique to check our collection of toys, treats, beds, and other pet care products as well as all the latest pet fashions, including Steelers and Penguins jerseys to help you support your favorite sports team in style!

Exam Rooms

We have 5 exam rooms that look similar to the one behind me, and one special exam room that you will see later in the tour.  Some pets are afraid of being here but I know that everyone here wants to take care of me, so I don’t mind sitting on the exam table.

Comfort Room

The Comfort Room is also part of the exam room section of the hospital but it doesn’t have a traditional exam table. It is a more relaxing environment that is used for behavior consultations, theraputic laser therapy  and euthanasia.

Laboratory

The Laboratory, or ”lab” as I hear the staff call it, is a busy place. There are all kinds of gadgets and things in this room that beep and make other funny noises. The technicians and assistants use the lab equipment to run tests that help the doctors figure out why a dog or cat isn’t feeling well.  Having this lab right in the hospital allows the doctors to get fast results so that their patients can be given the proper medications quickly.   For healthy dogs and cats, the lab is used to run tests which monitor subtle changes in the pets chemistry which can give us early warnings of disease.

Dentistry

This area is our dental suite which is used primarily for dental procedures.  While under anesthesia, our patients have an evaluation performed on each tooth to identify any problems that are visible externally.  Then we take dental radiographs so that the doctor can look for damage caused to the roots and bone by dental disease.   Finally the teeth are cleaned and polished to remove the bacteria that causes bad breath.  This picture is of me under anesthesia getting radiographs taken of my teeth, but is anesthesia really necessary?  Click HERE to find out!

Treatment Area

This is the area of the hospital where blood draws, nail trims, anal gland expressions, ear cleanings, catheter placements and other minor procedures are performed by the staff.  This is also where our patients start their journey into the surgery room.  We place IV catheters to give the staff an open vein in case of emergency while under anesthesia as well as clip and clean the surgical sites to offer the best patient care possible.

Dog Ward

This is where our healthy canine patients stay when here for surgery or hospitalization. There are many cages and runs to fit all sizes of pet and ensure that each dog can be safely kept during their stay at the hospital.  Everyone gets a comfy blanket to sleep on too!

Cat Ward

The cats are saying ”No Dogs Allowed!” so I’m not allowed in here but as you can see our feline friends have all the luxuries of home as well as a big window to watch the birds and chipmunks go by!

ICU

Just outside of the cat ward is our ICU where our surgical patients recover from their procedures. This is also where the sick pets stay so that the team can keep a close eye on them throughout the day.

Isolation

When pets with contagious diseases have to stay at the hospital there is a special room just for them. Normally, visitors are’nt allowed in this room but since no one was in there the doctors told me that it was okay.  Since these patients are often in critical condition there is a window into the cages.  This allows each patient to be observed without having to put on a special gown and entering the room each time we want to check on them.

Surgery

The is our surgery suite which has heated surgery tables to help the pets stay warm during procedures. To keep the area as clean as possible, anyone that enters must have a cap and mask on and the doors must always stay closed.  Our patients health is our top priority so only trained staff are aloud in the surgery room during procedures.  A large observation window is present so that many of our surgeries can be used as teaching aids for members of staff as well as high school and college students here doing observation studies to decide if the veterinary career is right for them.

Imaging

This room is our diagnostic imaging room.  It contains our digital radiograph machine and an ultrasound. I am told this equipment helps the doctor see inside us!
