Helping Your Cat and Dog Get Along

August 15, 2020

Do you share a home with both a dog and a cat? In some cases, Fluffy and Fido bond wonderfully, and may ultimately become BFFs. In other instances, they may fight like, well , cats and dogs. Below, a local Brookville vet offers some tips on helping your furry friends make peace.

Keep Fido Active

Dogs tend to be much calmer and better-behaved when they are getting enough exercise and playtime. Set aside time every day to walk and play with Fido. This will help him burn off some of that excess energy.

Don’t Just Go By Breed

A dog’s breed can definitely influence their behavior. However, you shouldn’t assume it’s the biggest factor. Personality is much more important! Consider Fido’s character and history, not just his breed.

Train Fido

Fido may need quite a bit of training to learn how to be a good boy. Teach your canine companion to be gentle with the cat … even when Fluffy is pouncing on his tail.

Separate Spaces

Dogs tend to help themselves to both their food as well as that of their feline roommates. Keep Fluffy’s food and litterbox in an area where Fido can’t access them. One option is to cut a small cat door into a closet.

Proper Introductions

First impressions are a big deal to our furry friends. Take your time and be patient when introducing your pets. Keep them separated at first, allowing them to get used to each other’s scents. Then, introduce them slowly under close supervision. If they fight, separate them and start over.

Let Them Grow Up Together

This is really the ideal option. Generally speaking, cats and dogs who grow up together do just fine. They may even become playmates and napping buddies! (Plus, you’ll get some adorable photos.)

Offer Safe Spaces

Cats tend to feel more secure in safe areas. Make sure that Fluffy has a designated place to retreat to in every room. This doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just somewhere Fido can’t reach her. Vertical spaces, such as cat towers, are perfect for this.

Know When to Say When

Unfortunately, peace and harmony isn’t always going to be possible. Squabbles can be quite dangerous, especially for your cat. If your dog is showing signs of aggression, you may need to rethink things. Ask your Brookville vet for specific advice.
