Dr. Jim Shields, VMD

Owner, Veterinarian

Dr. Jim Shields grew up on a dairy farm in western Pennsylvania, only five miles from where Brookville Veterinary Hospital currently stands. From the age of 12 until graduating college, he was a member of the 4-H organization, which only deepened his appreciation for animals and their care. Dr. Shields knew that he wanted to help other people by helping their animal companions—that’s why he decided to enter the world of veterinary medicine!

Dr. Shields attended Pennsylvania State University to study dairy management, then continued on to the University of Pennsylvania for veterinary school. He graduated in 1968 and launched his career in private practice. Brookville Veterinary Hospital moved from its initial location (an upstairs sunporch!) to a renovated former restaurant in 1973, and the current facility was built in 2006. Dr. Shields and his team have been serving the area’s pets and animal parents ever since. Medically, he’s fond of surgery work and he loves to pass on his knowledge to his staff and clients; Dr. Shields finds that the mentoring aspect of his job is one of his favorite parts of what he does.

Most of Dr. Shields’ free time away from work is spent with his family. He and his wife have four grown children, 13 wonderful grandchildren, and a great-grandchild! They share their home with one pet, a finicky cat named Gracie.

Dr. Erik Kasarda

Dr. Erik Kasarda, DVM

Veterinarian

Dr. Erik grew up on a farm in the Bloomsburg area with dogs, cats, chickens, and horses. He even raised his own chickens to show at state fairs. For Dr. Erik, working as a veterinarian allows him to tap into the unbridled joy of his childhood experiences with animals, while helping both people and pets at the same time. He’s proud to serve as a member of the veterinary team here at Brookville Veterinary Hospital!

Dr. Erik traveled for a period after high school, then enlisted in the United States Navy. After his service, he worked in biotechnical research before moving to Seattle, where he continued to work in biotech and started attending community college to start his veterinary career. Dr. Erik earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington, then attended Ross University’s School of Veterinary Medicine on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts. Next, he completed his clinical training at the University of Illinois before graduating as a licensed veterinarian.

Dr. Erik has been helping pets and animal parents in various hospitals around Pennsylvania for the past few years, and joined the Brookville Veterinary Hospital family in June of 2019. He’s been a member of the team ever since! He’s particularly fond of seeing a wide variety of cases on a daily basis—Dr. Erik views each and every appointment as a new start toward healing, and he’s happy to help facilitate that!

In his spare time, Dr. Erik likes bee-keeping, traveling, cooking, and spending time with his family and pets. He and his Fiance live with two cats. Linus has one eye and demands attention when it’s most inconvenient, and Ethel is rambunctious.
